Qatar 2022 World Cup- The exclusive SLC report of this year's Winter World Cup in Qatar
As part of its data intelligence partnership with Stadium World, SLC Management took a close look at the status quo in terms of attitudes toward the 2022 World Cup in Qatar for the "Fans: Attitudes toward the World Cup in Qatar" issue of Stadium World (Aug. 18, 2022). Since for the first time in the history of the World Cup the tournament will take place in winter this year, the investigation of the fans' mood is particularly interesting. More than 5,000 fans across Germany were surveyed on this topic.
The chart below (click on chart to enlarge) shows that only a very small proportion plan to travel to the desert for the big event. The vast majority of 98.1% will not attend the World Cup in Qatar, while only 0.6% would travel to Qatar if they had tickets for any matches. 0.1% would make the trip even without the corresponding tickets.
The reasons given by the 98.1% who will not be attending the FIFA World Cup are varied. With multiple answers possible, 70.5% see the fundamental awarding of the World Cup to Qatar as a reason not to visit the World Cup. The next two reasons cited also relate to Qatar itself. 60.2% cite the general situation in Qatar and 58.0% the human rights situation in Qatar as reasons. 16.2% of participants have concerns about local security.
In addition, one-fifth of respondents find it more interesting to watch the World Cup matches at home with family or friends. Maximilian Madeja, Managing Director of SLC Management, emphasizes that "private and public viewings represent great potential during this World Cup - providers and service providers who can contribute to such an experience should definitely keep this in mind".
When asked how respondents plan to watch the World Cup games, the most frequently mentioned answer is to watch at home with friends or family. Just over a quarter even plan to watch the games alone. Some of those surveyed also plan to watch the games in larger groups. For example, in pubs, clubhouses and the like, or at public viewing events.
