"The role reversal - this is the German EURO mood " // SLC Insights in the FAZ

In less than 4 months, the UEFA EURO 2024 starts in Germany. So far, there is not much sign of a successful German national team and the associated anticipation on the part of the fans. Nevertheless, soccer fans want to create a good atmosphere at the home European Championship - and thus support the DFB team. SLC Managing Director and expert Prof. Dr. Alfons Madeja explains in this context: "So far, the prospect of sporting success has pushed an event in advance. People were happy because Germany was successful - now an event has to push the sport."

A recent representative survey of 6,159 soccer fans conducted by SLC Management shows that for German fans, the success of the EURO is no longer inextricably linked to the success of the German national team. The results of this study, which shows a slightly different perspective on the mood in Germany for the European Championships, were taken up and published by the "Frankfurt Allgemeine Zeitung" newspaper.

82.2% of respondents are of the opinion that a good mood and atmosphere with an attractive supporting program for guests and hosts around the EURO play an important role in the success of the EURO, regardless of the sporting outcome. The fans also derive corresponding demands from this: Both the DFB (82.8%) and the host cities (70.2%) see it as the fans' duty to ensure that more is done in the run-up to the tournament to create an atmosphere and anticipation.

Madeja summarizes:
"Even if the majority of people do not expect the German national team to be a great success (only 21.4% think that reaching the semi-finals is realistic), the population is not prepared to let the anticipation of the European Championships be taken away from them. These results are important to guide the organizers and the DFB in the right direction."
However, the results of the study also show that the measures currently planned will not be enough to generate anticipation. FAZ editor Michael Horeni writes: "As a reminder, national and international soccer fans were asked about their needs in the run-up to the 2006 World Cup. Based on these results, a consistent event structure was created for the World Cup. For the first time, events at the World Cup and European Championships were not only held on match days, as had been the case until then. The concept also included the establishment of "public viewing" for the first time, which has been inextricably linked to major sporting events ever since. Madeja was also responsible for this, having developed these ideas as part of the official commission from the 2006 World Cup cities."

69.6% of German soccer fans are quite optimistic that there is still enough time to take appropriate measures for a repeat of the 2006 summer fairy tale.
